2010 Resolutions – #2 of 5 – Reuse my wardrobe

Three bags to St Vinnies later and the annual clear out of clothes, shoes and bags has finished. Have to admit I was slightly appalled at the amount I haven’t really worn/used or just bought on impulse.

But what about window shopping?

I’d like to only buy what I truly need this year and embrace the hidden frugalista in me. For virtual window shopping it will be Bluefly and French Sole (but will be resoling those ballet flats and probably ebaying or freecycling anything I haven’t worn last year).

Won’t it be boring?

For inspiration on styling my existing wardrobe, it will be Polyvore, an oddly names fashion site which enables you to play at being a stylist and create looks based on themes, seasons etc. without having to buy anything necessary. This was the very site used to style my work Christmas party outfit in a Mad Hatter goes vintage look.

Being a frugalista means quality not quantity, silk or cotton tops, leather shoes and bags, nothing man made or polyester. Seeing as I’m a Pisces, I should start my birthday wish-list to accommodate….well I didn’t say I was refusing gifts…….

2010 Resolutions – #1 of 5 – Be more green!

My first resolution for the new decade is to not just be ‘green’ but learn more about climate change.  Unfortunately news and alerts on climate change and the environment seems to mesh into the general background noise of day to day life. This year, I want to change that, at least for my household!

Volunteering Locally

To this end, I’ll apply to volunteer at local community projects in Marrickville and Newtown such as The Watershed. There are also a number of other projects from bush regeneration through to working on a local community nursery that look like they could be both fun and educative.

Learning

Of course everyone learns about recycling and pollution but climate change now has a political and business agenda.

@ActionAid_aus tweeted a link to a great resource called ‘The Story of Stuff Project’ which managed to explain in plain English but without being patronising (unlike the notorious Westpac ‘banana’ video) the mechanics and downside of Cap & Trade carbon trading systems.

It’s a perfect example of using Flash video with simple navigation and entertaining animations to illustrate a topic that is not necessary the most compelling for a Jo Bloggs like myself.

Check out the site here for more information on how you can get involved.

Growing our own veggies

After an amazing start unfortunately my green beans, cucumbers and capsicum plants were decimated by a stink bug, one morning I awoke to find nothing but stalks. The stink bugs didn’t like the strawberries though and gave these a wide berth.  It will be a fresh start for 2010 and hopefully with a bit of meshing it will be the last veggie massacre.
