Once upon a time there was a little girl who liked to climb trees, play “computer” games and decided to dye her Barbie’s platinum hair brown by dipping her upside down in a cup of cold tea. Needless to say she didn’t grow up a fan of Sixteen Candles or Pretty and Pink, a little bit mainstream for an oddball in the making.
A story about a psychotic ghost, dressed in black and white looking like a human humbug sweet however caught her eye and she was mesmerized forever by punk goth films of Tim Burton, herewith my belated June inspiration for celebrating eccentricity and the oddness in life and art.
My top 5 films in no partiular order are:
- BeetleJuice
- Mars Attacks
- Edward Scissorhands
- Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
- Sleepy Hollow
Regardless of the story, each one has Burton’s visual signature, a slightly skewed take on the world that I love so I’m ridiculously excited to see there’s a Tim Burton exhibition at ACMI in Melbourne until October 2010. Monsters, ghouls, aliens and robots? I’m there!
