Liberated by the bricks

Nathan Sawaya uses Lego bricks instead of clay, marble or plasticine for his amazing sculptures from the small to the gigantic, this chap must have the patience of a saint – check out the gallery at his site, http://www.brickartist.com/lego-art/tree-shadow.html.

n.b also a great way to publicise Lego as a creative brand and product…..

This year, I thought I’d post up who or what has inspired me each month. To start off 2010, the company I’m nominating for January is MDM Props in London. A company I first read about last year on wired.com in an article by Kate Kitamura, MDM are commissioned by artists such as Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor and Jake and Dinos Chapman to create and build their physical works of art, taking their ideas and ‘white labelling’ them by bringing them to life.

Why do they inspire me?

Working within digital production, we  often work  backstage, pulling strings, making cups of tea and trying to figure out problems from the banal to the complex. Most of the time we sit staring at the pixels working with ‘digital’, something that is abstract and not physically in front of us, there is no mass to digital, it boils down to alot of binary.

Imagine the challenges however of trying to find a shade of black paint that is ’20 times blacker than the next blackest shade’ or fighting with the laws of physics all the while managing the creative expectations of an artist.

Despite the inevitable stresses and pressures that this process must entail, imagine too the satisfaction of having completed a monumental piece of installation art.

i heart bit.ly.tv

Always being behind the eight ball, I have just come across bitly.tv and have completely fallen for the simple interface that uses a slider bar to filter video clip thumbnails so you can view what the ’world’ has been watching and is currently watching while also providing the ability to view a specific video and see associated tweets. Feels like I will be using this a lot…….

Spotted: Paste Up Art in Enmore

Luckily my dodgy old Nokia N95 has a half decent camera on it as I carry it everywhere, one of the main reasons is to capture anything street art wise that interests me. This could be anything from guerilla knitting to graffitti to paste ups (like this one below). I’m never sure as to what is ‘real’ street art to what is actually some pr or marketing agency. Anyway, I’ve also decided to experiment with Tumblr (shock horror) but with the focus on stuff I have spotted and that inspires me around the Inner West so we’ll see how that goes :-)

Darth Vader on your soles?

Or rather one of the Storm Troopers, the boys in the office are very excited (*eyes rolling*) about the launch of the Star Wars themed Adidas Originals collection, the ad is pretty good though not sure I’d spend hundreds on a pair of pristine white sneakers that will eventually get tatty….I hear ebay calling……

Craft Work Fridays – Pablo the Pinhole Camera

pablo_cameraWorking as a digital producer, I have a strange fascination with retro. For craftwork Friday I am going to make a pin hole camera, who knows how it will turn out. Will post the results on Saturday, the anticipation of how the photo will develop is something that is missing from digital photography.

If you want to try it out too, Corbis has more funky templates that you can download here, I’ve picked Pablo :-)

2010 Resolutions – #2 of 5 – Reuse my wardrobe

Three bags to St Vinnies later and the annual clear out of clothes, shoes and bags has finished. Have to admit I was slightly appalled at the amount I haven’t really worn/used or just bought on impulse.

But what about window shopping?

I’d like to only buy what I truly need this year and embrace the hidden frugalista in me. For virtual window shopping it will be Bluefly and French Sole (but will be resoling those ballet flats and probably ebaying or freecycling anything I haven’t worn last year).

Won’t it be boring?

For inspiration on styling my existing wardrobe, it will be Polyvore, an oddly names fashion site which enables you to play at being a stylist and create looks based on themes, seasons etc. without having to buy anything necessary. This was the very site used to style my work Christmas party outfit in a Mad Hatter goes vintage look.

Being a frugalista means quality not quantity, silk or cotton tops, leather shoes and bags, nothing man made or polyester. Seeing as I’m a Pisces, I should start my birthday wish-list to accommodate….well I didn’t say I was refusing gifts…….
